XPENG Robotics
Guangzhou EV maker XPENG's audacious humanoid bet. IRON — 178 cm, 70 kg, 82 DOF body + 22 DOF hands — runs the Turing AI chip at 3000 TOPS. Currently ~$150,000; mass production targeted end-2026, initially deployed in XPENG's EV assembly lines.
Iron will — XPENG bets that EV manufacturing know-how is the fastest path to humanoid mass production.
XPENG (HKEX:9868, NYSE:XPEV) was founded in 2014 as a smart electric vehicle maker, headquartered in Guangzhou, and rapidly grew into one of China's leading EV brands. Like Tesla and Xiaomi, XPENG has decided that automotive manufacturing experience — vertical integration, supply-chain depth, battery technology, autonomous driving AI — is a strong foundation for humanoid robots. XPENG IRON was first unveiled in November 2024 and has since become one of the most visually striking humanoid programs in China.
Technically, IRON is among the most ambitious humanoids globally. The 178 cm, 70 kg robot features 82 degrees of freedom in its body and 22 DOF per dexterous hand (44 hand DOF total) — extreme dexterity for tasks like cable routing and small-part manipulation. Compute is provided by three XPENG Turing AI chips delivering a combined 3,000 TOPS — among the highest in any humanoid worldwide. IRON's vision system claims 720° field-of-view through stereo cameras and LiDAR, eliminating blind spots.
XPENG's commercial strategy is initially captive: IRON is being deployed in XPENG's own EV assembly lines to validate reliability before external commercial launch. Current pricing is approximately $150,000 USD, with mass production targeted for end-2026. Beyond IRON, XPENG is investing heavily in humanoid R&D — the company sees humanoids as a natural extension of its automotive AI work. In China's intensely competitive humanoid market — alongside Unitree, AgiBot, UBTech, and Fourier — XPENG's automotive depth and design ambition put it in the top tier of contenders.
