Agility Robotics
The company that put humanoid robots to work in Amazon warehouses — now establishing a China joint venture to bring Digit to Asia-Pacific logistics.
From Oregon labs to Amazon fulfilment centres — the humanoid that proved logistics viability.
Agility Robotics began as a spin-out from Oregon State University, where researchers spent a decade studying bipedal locomotion inspired by ostrich biomechanics. That focus on energy-efficient walking — rather than brute-force hydraulics — gave Digit a gait uniquely suited to mixed human-robot environments: narrow aisles, uneven warehouse floors, and spaces designed entirely around human proportions. When Amazon led a strategic funding round and began real-world deployments in its fulfilment network, Agility became the first humanoid company to prove operational viability at commercial scale in logistics.
The 2024 China joint venture reflects the gravitational pull of Asia-Pacific's manufacturing and logistics base. Signed with a Beijing-based industrial technology partner backed by state-linked capital, the JV gives Agility a localised entity to navigate procurement, data compliance, and customer relationships in China. The Digit SDK (China) package offers Mandarin-language interfaces and WeChat integration, acknowledging that deployment in Chinese enterprise environments requires more than hardware translation.
Digit v5, released in 2025, incorporated learnings from Amazon deployment data — smoother gait at 1.6 m/s, improved dexterous hand grip for irregular package shapes, and a 10% weight reduction. The VLA model developed in collaboration with Amazon Robotics AI can generalise across shelf-pick, tote-transfer, and bin-sort tasks with minimal retraining, a capability that directly addresses the retraining cost objection that operators raise when evaluating humanoids against fixed automation.
Humanoid Robot Models
The humanoid that made history in Amazon's fulfilment network. Digit v4 folds its arms for compact transport, enabling operation in narrow aisles built for humans. Visual-inertial odometry with LiDAR and stereo cameras allows reliable navigation across complex, dynamic warehouse environments. The swappable 16-hour battery is a key differentiator for multi-shift logistics deployments.
The 2025 update to Digit incorporates lessons from real Amazon deployment data. Improved dexterous hands handle irregular package shapes more reliably, the 10% weight reduction reduces floor loading, and a smoother 1.6 m/s gait improves throughput. The VLA model from Amazon Robotics AI generalises across multiple task types — shelf-pick, tote-transfer, bin-sort — reducing retraining costs significantly.
The China JV deployment kit localises Digit for enterprise operations in mainland China. The Mandarin-language command interface allows floor supervisors to interact naturally with the robot, while WeChat integration enables status reporting through enterprise channels operators already use. A China-compliant data privacy stack ensures that operational data meets local regulatory requirements — removing a significant adoption barrier for large-scale Chinese logistics operators.
